As my previous post goes about Microsoft's layout engine, this post has to be about the layout engine of Mozilla foundation. Being an open source community, Gecko is also an open source layout engine and a lot of web browsers have been made over it.
It was originally created by Netscape Communication Corporation, but all the current work and maintenance is being done at Mozilla Foundation.
The main purpose of development of this engine was to support open internet standards.

History of browsers - Trident layout engine
Trident layout engine was designed by Microsoft for use in its revolutionary browser (it did create revolution) Internet Explorer. It is popularly known as MSHTML.
This is still used in IE 7.x series.
I have given a brief idea about Trident because the real blog will begin after explaining the layout engines. So I thought it would be a better idea to explain them all first and then start off with reviews on browsers.
